Will I live on my own or have a roommate?
More than likely you will be living on your own in a furnished, studio apartment. Most schools offer their ESL teachers an apartment within walking distance of the school. If shared accommodation is offered, this will be disclosed before introducing you to the school and the issue can be discussed with the Director during your interview for teaching jobs in Korea. Most schools understand that foreigners prefer not to share accommodation. |

What will my apartment look like?
Most ESL teachers are housed in studio apartments which come fully furnished with a bed, dresser, TV, table, chairs and fully equipped kitchen, including a washing machine. However, it is not customary to have ovens or driers in Korea. Linen is included however we suggest you bring your own fitted double sheet as sometimes the linen is not very soft. You may be surprised by the Korean bathrooms, which usually consist of just a showerhead but no shower curtains or wall around it, a toilet and a sink. Very rarely will you have a bathtub. The bathrooms are tiled and easy to clean.
There is a chance that the school you apply to may offer shared accommodation. In this case, a 2 bedroom apartment will be provided. Before signing the contract, you will be made fully aware of your living arrangements. |

Is there English TV and will I have a TV in my apartment?
All apartments will have a TV and often a VCR and DVD as well. You can request cable and your Director will happily arrange this for you but this will be included as part of your utility costs (usually $20 per month for full cable). There are a number of English channels to choose from and often, Korean channels offer American movies with Korean sub-titles. The US Military also broadcasts a television network, which includes your American sitcoms and popular movies. There are many video stores in all neighbourhoods so renting English videos is simple. If you would like English TV channels ask your Director for the following: - OCN - AFN (Army Forces Network) - CNN - On Style - Super Action
If you do not have a VCR in your room and you want to watch movies, many people go to the DVD-bang where, for $7 per person, per movie, you can rent a private room with a big screen TV. Note that some of these DVD-bangs can be a little sleazy! Most of the newer ones are nicely furnished and very comfortable. |
