To teach English in Korea, you must have a University Bachelor's degree. This degree can be in any discipline, to teach ESLr however an education degree is preferred. To be eligible for an E2 Visa, you must be a native English speaker and hold a valid passport from the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom or USA. This is a government regulation enforced by Korean Immigration and unfortunately there is little we can do to change this for English teachers. Before you apply for a teaching job, please make sure you meet the criteria above.
Most of our positions teaching English overseas are in English Academies known in Korea as “Hagwons”. An ESL teacher will teach at a private English school, which offers ESL classes for kindergarten to middle school students. This makes up most of the teaching jobs in Korea. The average class size you will teach is around 10-12 students so they are manageable. Classes run anywhere from 40-60 minutes and most teaching schedules require the teacher to teach between 6 and 8 classes a day. Any hours taught over the agreed contract hours will be paid overtime. All schools provide some form of teaching materials to provide English teachers instructions and suggestions on how to teach English. All schools will provide teachers with detailed curriculums to make English teaching easier for the English teacher to grasp. Teaching ESL is a rewarding experience for those looking for a teaching job that is both challenging and exciting. Most of our schools are looking for ESL teachers who are open to teaching English to students of all ages. When we conduct the pre-screening interview, we will discuss the overseas jobs that we offer and find out what you want in a teaching ESL position. This will help us select the right school for you. Some schools offer classes ranging from kindergarten to high school while others focus on younger students only. We often recommend teaching at a school that offers a variety of ages to give you more experience as a teacher.
All schools will train you in their teaching jobs, and provide you with a well laid out curriculum to follow. On our web site you will have access to teaching resource links and to some of the most popular sites for teaching English as a second language. Some schools you will expect you to do weekly lesson plans, write reports and mark papers which means a few extra hours a week. As a teacher you will have to prepare some materials to teach, however most schools will provide a comprehensive guideline for the teacher to follow.
Most Hagwons prefer a teacher that is energetic, easy going, sincere and willing to learn about all that is involved with ESL jobs in Korea. For some teaching positions experience is important but for most it’s not a requirement to be a great teacher. The school director expects you to be respectful and professional at all times. You don’t have to speak Korean. And most schools insist that only English be spoken in the classroom. We are looking for high quality teachers who are effective communicators, well spoken and fluent in English. If you are passionate about teaching, open minded and looking for an experience of a lifetime, this may be the opportunity you have been waiting for.
